Calabria

Why buy a home in Calabria ?

One of the co-owners of Calabria Properties, James Goodwin, has been visiting Cetraro on the western coast of Calabria regularly for twenty years thanks to an introduction by an old school friend whose father was from the town. For James, the attraction has always been the variety of friendly people, their long established culture, surrounding sea and undulating landscapes, universal amenities, delicious food, year round warmer weather, proximity to an international airport, and an ideal place to work from home.

But the association runs wider and deeper than personal interest. Calabria is Italy's most underappreciated region presenting an opportunity for those seeking a relatively low cost, culturally diverse and coastal/rural escape throughout the year in southern Italy’s extended foot at the centre of the Mediterranean. Calabria enjoys 800km of coastline and is between 40km-110km wide (up to an hour and a half by car) with 90% of the land 200 meters above sea level including three mountain ranges where you can ski in winter.

In recent years, the region has been gathering positive interest in the media mostly due to its tourism, festivals and food. In the English language that includes recommendations in Time Magazine, Forbes, CNN, Financial Times, The Guardian, The Independent, The Times, Daily Telegraph, Daily Mail, Metro, Huffpost, Irish Times, Khaleej Times, Conde Nast Traveller, Harper's Bazaar and many tourism publications. In 2017, Calabria was included in the New York Times list of places to visit worldwide. In 2019 it was among the top 19 destinations globally, according to Airbnb.

Beyond the tourist attractions, Calabria can offer visitors a comparatively low priced holiday home or a permanent place to live in welcoming neighbourhoods. For now, the property market remains remote to foreigners but promising for the more forward thinking. Hence, it seems natural for Calabria Properties to offer homes for sale to buyers from outside the region and to guide them throughout the Italian home purchasing process in an unfamiliar location. Not only will the new home owners share the delights of southern Italy at relatively low prices, their purchase will assist the commercial rejuvenation of these ancient and vibrant communities. In 2021, the Financial Times included Calabria among Mediterranean property destinations for its good value.

To express more of Calabria's many virtues, James wrote the following articles in International Living magazine in 2019 and in Luxury Travel magazine in 2020.
